In the beginning...
The house retained many of it’s original features, perhaps because it had been decades since any decorating had been done. It felt loved, but tired and worn and it desperate need of a complete overhaul. We were determined to keep as many of the period features as possible and reinstate any that were missing.
Most of the house was covered in lining paper to cover the cracks and had to be stripped before the electrics and plastering could be done. The only wallpaper we were reluctant to remove was a beautiful block printed design is called Blackthorn by William Morris in the hallway. Although we loved the design, it was worn through in places and a bit dark for an area of the house with no direct sunlight. We saved the job to last as it was one of the first things that caught our eye when we first viewed the house.
After stripping a whole house Cookie was quite reluctant to hang any new paper on the walls. I however, wanted to replace the William Morris paper somewhere else in the house. Having spent many weekends selling such designs in Harrods furnishing fabric department (many many years ago). I wanted it hanging on at least one wall, Cookie was going to take some persuading!
